Colts release receiver Darius Slayton less than a month after signing him without a single game played
Indianapolis cut veteran receiver Darius Slayton on Friday after a knee injury and a slow start learning the offense kept him off the field in all four games.

The Colts' big-play experiment at receiver lasted less than a month.
Indianapolis announced Friday that it released veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton. The team signed him as a free agent on Sept. 22 after Alec Pierce went on injured reserve with a foot injury. Slayton never appeared in a game for the Colts.
Learning curve then a knee injury
Slayton sat out Weeks 3 and 4 while he learned the offense. Coach Shane Steichen said after the Commanders game that Slayton was still getting up to speed. A knee injury popped up in the final practice before the Week 5 game at Pittsburgh and he was ruled out. He returned to full practice Wednesday before the team cut him two days later.
What it leaves behind
Slayton is 29 and spent his first seven seasons with the New York Giants. He has 296 catches for 4,435 yards and 22 touchdowns in 106 career games. The Colts signed him to stretch the field and instead remain without a true deep threat.
Help could be on the way. Pierce is eligible to come off injured reserve for the Week 7 game against the Vikings on Oct. 25.
