Denver's defense found a way to finish the job in overtime.

Ja'Quan McMillian intercepted Sam Darnold in the extra period and Wil Lutz kicked a 53-yard field goal to give the Denver Broncos a 17-14 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night in Denver. The Broncos are 4-2 after a rough six-week opening stretch while the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks fell to 3-3. Seattle has now lost as many games as it did all of last season.

A strong start for Denver

Bo Nix led two long scoring drives in the first half. J.K. Dobbins ran in from 4 yards out and RJ Harvey scored from a yard out to put Denver up 14-3 at the break. Seattle's only first-half points came on a 55-yard field goal by Jason Myers.

Seattle storms back

After managing just three points on their first eight drives the Seahawks put together an 11-play, 67-yard drive that ended with George Holani scoring from a yard out. Darnold hit Rashid Shaheed for the two-point conversion to make it 14-11 with 5:41 left.

Denver looked like it had the game in hand when Kris Abrams-Draine intercepted Darnold at the Denver 30 with 1:25 to go. But the Broncos went three-and-out and punted. Shaheed returned it 31 yards to midfield and Myers tied the game with a 34-yard field goal with three seconds left.

The overtime pick

In overtime McMillian stepped in front of a pass meant for Shaheed at the Denver 43. A few plays later Lutz drilled the game-winner from 53 yards.

Even without star cornerback Patrick Surtain II and safety Talanoa Hufanga, both out with ankle injuries, Denver's defense sacked Darnold five times and hit him 17 times. Darnold went 27 of 51 for 278 yards with two interceptions. Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught 12 passes for 134 yards.

Injuries and what's next

Seahawks tight end Elijah Arroyo left late in the first half with a right shoulder injury. Broncos running back Tyler Badie hurt his thumb in the second quarter.

Both teams have extra rest before their next game. Seattle hosts the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 25 and Denver hosts the Arizona Cardinals the same day.
