The teenager who opened fire inside an Oregon elementary school was carrying a shotgun that his own mother had bought, according to the Associated Press.

What the AP found

The AP says the 16-year-old, whose name has not been made public, brought the pump-action gun into Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend on Thursday. Police say his victims were a teacher and three children who were 5, 8 and 11 years old.

A bystander then shot the teen dead with a gun of his own. Fox News, citing a law enforcement source, reported that the man held a permit to carry a firearm.

Minutes that mattered

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz told reporters that dispatch first heard about the attack at 12:59 p.m., when a caller in a car said someone was shooting at them. Dispatchers were soon swamped with more calls reporting that the gunman was going into the school.

Krantz said officers reached the campus less than three minutes after that first call. One officer soon learned from a local resident that the teen was already down after being shot.

The chief said the teen blasted through the school's locked doors to get in. The armed bystander went in behind him and shot him.

Officers then entered, confirmed the suspect was dead and checked the building for other threats before giving first aid to the victims. All four victims later died.

Thanks for those who stepped in

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek thanked the parents, school employees and emergency crews whose quick action she credited with preventing more deaths. She acknowledged the emotional weight they now carry and said she is thinking of them.

Police have not said what drove the attack.
