Anthony Edwards scores 45 with nine 3s as the Timberwolves spoil Giannis Antetokounmpo's Heat debut 131-106
Edwards joined Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan as the only players with multiple 40-point season openers. LaMelo Ball scored 21 in his Minnesota debut.

Anthony Edwards hit nine 3-pointers and scored 45 points Wednesday night as the Minnesota Timberwolves spoiled Giannis Antetokounmpo's first game with the Miami Heat, beating them 131-106 in Miami.
Edwards scored 41 in last season's opener at Portland. That made him only the third player in NBA history with at least 40 points in more than one season opener, joining Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan. Chamberlain did it four straight years from 1959 through 1962. Jordan did it in 1986, 1989 and 1995.
"Fire," Edwards said at his locker when he heard the stat. "That's fire."
More 3s than the whole Heat team
Edwards went 16 for 29 from the field and 9 for 17 from 3-point range with 10 rebounds and three assists in just over 33 minutes. His nine 3s were one more than Miami made as a team (8 of 33). He scored 12 points in the first quarter, nine in the second, 15 in the third and nine more in the fourth before he sat down for good.
"With Anthony's mindset and abilities, he's always thrived and lived for and embraced the moments," Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said. "And opening night is always going to be a moment."
Edwards said a Heat player talking trash from the Miami bench fired him up, though he did not know who the player was. "He was talking pretty crazy," Edwards said. "And then when I started talking to him, he didn't really have too much more to say."
He had a sweeter reason too. "My wife sent me a picture of my daughter watching the game, staying up past her bedtime," he said. "So, yeah, it meant a little more to me."
LaMelo Ball's debut and Giannis' rough start
LaMelo Ball scored 21 in his first game for Minnesota. Jaden McDaniels added 17, Ayo Dosunmu had 16 and Jonathan Kuminga scored 12. Rudy Gobert grabbed 15 rebounds. The Wolves outscored Miami 63-24 on 3-pointers and outrebounded the Heat 52-34.
Antetokounmpo scored 35 on 13-for-19 shooting before fouling out of his Heat debut. Bam Adebayo scored 15. Miami has now lost three straight season openers, the third time that has happened in franchise history.
"We got tested," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.
Minnesota broke the game open with a 23-7 run that bridged halftime and turned a one-point lead into a 78-61 edge. After Miami got within eight in the third quarter, the Wolves answered with a 45-23 run that included 18 points from Edwards. The Timberwolves visit Orlando on Friday while the Heat host Detroit.
