Tuskegee University in Alabama now holds a title no other historically Black college or university has earned. The school announced on Sept. 30 that the Department of War designated it a Distinguished Military College. Only five institutions across the country were chosen.

What the title means

The designation goes to schools that show strong results in producing officers and developing military leaders while keeping academic standards high. For Tuskegee it opens the door to building a full Corps of Cadets and expanding leadership training on campus.

The university already has 197 students in ROTC programs spread over all five branches of the armed services. Tuskegee stands out among American universities for offering a path to a commission in every one of them.

A leader with a personal stake

President Mark A. Brown graduated from Tuskegee in 1986 and went on to a 32-year Air Force career that ended with the rank of major general. He called the news deeply personal and said the school gave him the base for his own military service.

"This designation will allow us to expand those opportunities for future generations of students," Brown said.

What comes next

Leaders expect the title to help with recruiting and scholarships. They also plan to steer new investment into aviation and artificial intelligence along with cybersecurity and biotechnology and engineering. Brown framed the honor as recognition of more than a century of service to the country.
