Novak Djokovic's chase for title No. 103 will have to wait. The 39-year-old lost to Jan-Lennard Struff 6-7 (4), 7-5, 7-6 (5) on Thursday at the Swiss Indoors in Basel.

Struff is 36 and ranked 47th in the world. He served 27 aces to outlast one of the greatest players ever in a match that came down to a final tiebreak.

Djokovic stays at 102 career titles. A win in Basel would have tied Roger Federer's 103, the second-most in the Open era.

A tough night for the seeds

Djokovic was not the only big name to go out. Top seed Ben Shelton lost to Jerome Kym, a Swiss wild card ranked No. 222. The home crowd was thrilled.

Other favorites moved on. Arthur Fils beat Alex Michelsen. Taylor Fritz beat Denis Shapovalov.

What is next

Djokovic has not said where he will play next. The season is winding down with the ATP Finals coming in November.

Struff will try to keep his run going in the quarterfinals after the biggest win of his late-career surge.
