The two-time Olympic champion from Switzerland announced her retirement from Alpine skiing Tuesday. She is 32.

The decision came 11 months after a serious crash in downhill training at St. Moritz last December. She hurt her neck, knee and wrist.

"A long process"

Gisin had said she would decide on her future only after getting back on snow to train.

"It has been a long process of reflection," she said in a statement. "But today I am very happy and look forward to everything the future holds."

She said returning to St. Moritz in September filled her with gratitude for her health and for all the great moments of her career.

Olympic gold twice

Gisin won Alpine combined gold at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. Mikaela Shiffrin took silver that day.

She defended the title in Beijing four years later. She also won bronze in super-G in Beijing.

She was one of the rare racers who competed in every event. She won one World Cup race in slalom and reached the podium 21 times.

Her first big medal came at the 2017 world championships on home snow in St. Moritz. It was silver in the combined at the same place where her career effectively ended.

A skiing family

Gisin started on the World Cup as a slalom racer in the 2012-13 season. Her older sister Dominique was a team star then.

Dominique won Olympic downhill gold in 2014 in a rare tie with Tina Maze.

Michelle married Italian racer Luca De Aliprandini during the offseason. He is a former world championships silver medalist in giant slalom.
