Pennsylvania homecoming king hands his crown to a classmate with Down syndrome and the gym erupts

Keny Cedanio Ramirez held the homecoming crown for only a few seconds. He decided it looked better on his friend.

A pep rally surprise

Mahanoy Area High School in Pennsylvania's Schuylkill County crowned its 2026 homecoming king on Friday as part of a districtwide homecoming pep rally. Before the winner was called Ramirez and fellow nominee Axton Kuhla stood side by side with their arms around each other.

When Ramirez heard his own name he did not soak up the spotlight. He walked over to Kuhla, who has Down syndrome. Then he took off his sash and crown and gave them to his classmate.

Tears in the bleachers

The gym broke into applause. Kuhla covered his face with his hands as the moment sank in and then the two boys shared a long hug. In the stands students and staff members wiped away tears while cheerleaders on the floor joined the celebration.

Kuhla stood wearing the crown as the cheering kept going. Ramirez clapped right beside him.

A clip that keeps spreading

Video of the moment raced across social media over the weekend. The person who posted it called the gesture real character and leadership. Plenty of viewers praised the teen for sharing his big moment and giving a friend a memory he will never forget.

It was a chilly and busy week for the Golden Bears. Weather worries canceled the homecoming parade and the football team lost a close game to Minersville that night. Nobody in Mahanoy City seems to be talking much about the score.
