Haley Stevens could skip El-Sayed's Detroit rally over ads, her fiance warns

Jason Turkish says Rep. Haley Stevens could pull her support from Abdul El-Sayed and skip his Sunday rally unless he condemns two ads she calls offensive.

Abdul El-Sayed could be about to lose a key ally in his Michigan Senate run. The warning comes from the man engaged to Rep. Haley Stevens.

Jason Turkish said in a video interview Friday that Stevens may stop backing her fellow Democrat unless he speaks out against political ads she sees as antisemitic.

"I don't think she's going to be supporting Abdul El-Sayed very much longer," he said.

A Sunday deadline

El-Sayed has a big rally planned Sunday at a church in Detroit. He hopes to reach Black voters there with Stevens and Rep. Jim Clyburn at his side.

Turkish says Stevens will not show up unless El-Sayed disavows the ads. Losing her would sting because the candidate has had trouble winning over Black and Jewish voters.

The ads in question

The main fight is over a spot from a super PAC that supports El-Sayed. It takes aim at U.S. aid to Israel. In it a couple shops for groceries for their children while the mother says they can't buy eggs because $7 has to go toward "killing Palestinians."

Turkish says the ad leans on harmful antisemitic stereotypes. Stevens has also asked El-Sayed to condemn a second campaign ad that features Tucker Carlson.

A split inside the household

Turkish is Jewish and calls himself a lifelong Democrat. He says he has already broken with El-Sayed and will not vote for him.

For now Stevens is still standing behind the Democratic nominee in a contest the whole country has its eye on. Turkish said the spot she is in feels "horrific" and "uncomfortable" because she is torn between backing her party and calling out language that offends her.

His advice for the candidate was blunt: "Just condemn the ads, Abdul."
