Elke Sommer, the 'A Shot in the Dark' bombshell, dies at 85
Elke Sommer, the Berlin-born star of the Clouseau comedy A Shot in the Dark, has died at 85 after her heart gave out just days shy of her 86th birthday.

Elke Sommer has died. The actress who sizzled opposite Peter Sellers in "A Shot in the Dark" was 85.
Her stepson Sebastian Walther broke the news to the German press. He said her heart gave out Wednesday while she was at the Bel Air house she called home. Her 86th birthday was just one week away.
The loss comes only three months after her husband Wolf Walther died of cancer.
A Berlin girl goes to Hollywood
Sommer was born in Berlin. Her film career took off in the 1960s and lasted nearly six decades.
Her best known part came in 1964. She played Maria Gambrelli in "A Shot in the Dark," the second Inspector Clouseau film. Sellers starred as the bumbling detective.
A busy career
She kept working at a fast clip after that. Her credits include "Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number!" in 1966. She also made "And Then There Were None" in 1974 plus the British comedy "Carry On Behind" in 1975.
That same year she teamed up with Sellers again for "The Prisoner of Zenda."
Over the years she shared the screen with Paul Newman as well as James Garner. Dick Van Dyke and Edward G. Robinson were on that list too.
TV kept her busy as well. She popped up on "The Six Million Dollar Man" plus "St. Elsewhere." She was also in the TV movie "Inside the Third Reich."
The Zsa Zsa feud
In the 1980s she clashed with Zsa Zsa Gabor after the two worked together on "Circus of the Stars." Sommer said Gabor and her husband trashed her in print. She sued them for defamation and won $3.3 million.
Her last credit came in 2017. She voiced a character named Nette in the animated short "A Thousand Kisses."
