The NFL has suspended a second Buffalo Bills defender for spitting during last week's win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Defensive back and special teams captain Sam Franklin Jr. will sit out one game without pay, the league announced Wednesday. He plans to appeal, according to sources.

The incident came with 1:32 left in Buffalo's 33-30 win, just after a successful Raiders extra point.

Franklin pushes back

A couple of hours after the announcement, Franklin posted a slow-motion replay of the extra point to his Instagram stories. The clip ends before the play is over and does not show his response.

"Not a dirty play what so ever! Will always defend myself though. Still won't spit on anyone," he wrote. He added a hashtag that hinted he had been hit in the groin on the play.

The second Bills suspension

Earlier this week the league suspended safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson one game without pay for spitting in the direction of Raiders tight end Brock Bowers earlier in the same game.

Both suspensions fall under the rule that bans any act "contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship."

Unless he wins his appeal, Franklin will miss the Bills' Week 8 game against the Baltimore Ravens. Buffalo has a bye this week. The appeal would be heard by one of four officers jointly picked by the league and the players union: Derrick Brooks, Jordy Nelson, Ron Rivera or James Thrash.

Franklin is a seven-year NFL veteran in his second season with Buffalo. He has played more than three quarters of the team's special teams snaps this season and has six tackles in six games.

Coach Joe Brady said Monday there would be no further team punishment for Gardner-Johnson. He said spitting at an opponent crosses a line but that he does not need every player to act the same way to build a winning culture.
