Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. is facing a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge after a traffic stop in Carmel, Indiana, earlier this month.

The Hamilton County prosecutor's office filed the charge Monday, court records show. Richardson, 24, was pulled over on Oct. 12, one day after the Colts' loss to the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

According to the police affidavit, an officer stopped the black Dodge Charger he was driving because its expired plate was registered to another vehicle.

What police say they found

The officer wrote that he smelled marijuana right away. Richardson admitted he had smoked in the car because he did not want to smoke around his children, the affidavit says. He also told the officer he had a small amount of marijuana with him.

He was detained in handcuffs while officers searched the car. They found a small jar of marijuana and an open bag of THC gummies in the glove box.

Richardson was not arrested. He received a citation for the expired plate and a summons for marijuana possession.

What comes next

His initial hearing was waived. A bench trial is set for Jan. 4.

The Colts said they are aware of the situation and are gathering more information. On Friday coach Shane Steichen said the team would "keep all the stuff internal, in-house." He added that Richardson remains the team's backup quarterback.
